“BUILDING MENTAL HEALTH CAPACITY AT HIGHER EDUCATION INSTITUTES IN SOUTHEAST ASIA”

“Building Mental Health Capacity at Higher Education Institutes in Southeast Asia”
(MentalHigh Project – funded by the Erasmus+ Programme of the European Union)
The contemporary higher education landscape presents an urgent imperative to comprehensively enhance the mental health capacity of both students and lecturers. Proactively strengthening awareness, refining support mechanisms, and implementing effective management are not only inevitable trends but also the foundation for cultivating a positive, humanistic, and sustainable academic environment that fosters holistic intellectual and psychological development.
The project “Building Mental Health Capacity at Higher Education Institutes in Southeast Asia” is funded by the Erasmus+ Programme of the European Union for the period 2023–2026. The project aims to build capacity for mental health in (and through) HEIs in Vietnam and Cambodia with the long-term goal to transform the universities into health-promoting settings that enable students and all staff to thrive and succeed to their best potential.
The project involves a consortium of 10 universities from Europe and Southeast Asia:
Europe: Hamburg University of Applied Sciences (HAW – Project coordinator), Germany; Turku University of Applied Sciences (Turku UAS), Finland; Universitat Jaume I De Castellon, (UJI), Spain.
Vietnam: Thai Nguyen University of Economics and Business Administration (TUEBA); VNU University of Education (VNU-UEd); VNU HCM University of Social Sciences and Humanities (USSH); Vinh University of Technology Education (VUTED); Thai Nguyen University of Agriculture and Forestry (TUAF).
Campuchia: Royal University of Phnom Penh (RUPP); National Institute of Education (NIE).
As a key activity of the project, the International Conference on “Building Mental Health Capacity at Higher Education Institutes in Southeast Asia” will be held to create an academic forum for exchanging experiences and sharing effective mental health support activities in higher education.
📌 Conference Objectives
– To introduce and exchange research findings and key outputs of the MentalHigh Project, including the MoodCare online course, the Shining Mind mobile application, which help support students’ mental health.
– To discuss the role of and solutions for integrating mental health support into university policies, strategies, and governance, towards building a happy, humanistic, and sustainable academic environment.
– To share experiences and effective mental health support activities being implemented at universities in Vietnam, Germany, Spain, Finland and Cambodia.
– To deliberate on the role of digital technology in enhancing awareness, delivering service, and training in mental health within higher education.
– To strengthen networking, promote international cooperation, and disseminate the project’s values within the regional academic community.

The conference is expected to welcome nearly 300 delegates (both in-person and online) to share and discuss key topics related to the research and implementation outcomes of the MentalHigh Project, including:
- Integrating mental health as a core component of university policy and governance – towards a happy, humanistic, and sustainable academic environment.
- Developing digital intervention to support student mental health, featuring MoodCare online course and Shining Mind application.
- Evaluating the effectiveness of mobile technology and online courses in improving mental health knowledge, skills, and awareness.
- Sharing practical experiences in students’ mental health care from universities in Vietnam and the Southeast Asian region.
- Promoting international cooperation in research, training, and implementing mental health support initiatives in higher education.
The conference presents an opportunity for educational managers, experts, lecturers, and students to discuss and share initiatives, thereby contributing to the creation of a happy, humanistic, and sustainable academic environment in the Southeast Asian region.
